In the Event of an Emergency
Please note that the Consulate of Sweden has no role in evacuations or rescue operations as these matters are solely handled by American authorities. In case of a personal emergency, Swedish citizens are welcome to call the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C. at (202) 467-2600 and follow the instructions. For more information visit the Embassy website. In case of a life threathening emergency please call 911.
REGULAR PASSPORTS
You can only renew or obtain a regular Swedish passport at the Consulate General of Sweden in San Francisco, Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C. or the Consulate General of Sweden in New York City. The Mobile Passport Station is no longer in use.

You can only get a passport in the name you are registered as in Sweden. You can request an extract from the population register (utdrag ur folkbokföringen) by contacting the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) at +46 8 564 851 60.
EMERGENCY PASSPORTS
It is possible for Swedes in the Southern California area to apply for an emergency passport at the Consulate of Sweden in Los Angeles, CA. The procedure takes less than an hour. The application must be done in person by appointment only. Please note that there are several restrictions that apply to an emergency passport. COORDINATION NUMBERS & NAME REGISTRATION
A child applicant who was born abroad and has never had a Swedish passport, must first be added to the Swedish population register by applying for a coordination number. The application is free of charge and can be filed at all Swedish Consulates in the US and at the Embassy in Washington. The child must be present when the application is filed, and must be accompanied by at least one legal guardian, however, a signature is needed by both legal guardians. TAXES & RETIREMENT BENEFITS
If you are a Swedish citizen and receive a pension from Sweden, you need to provide a life certificate every year. The information provided by you in the life certificate will ensure that you are receiving the compensation you are entitled to. HANDING OUT PASSPORTS
If you applied for a new passport in the USA or in Sweden, you can request to get it shipped for pickup at The Consulate of Sweden in LA when it's ready. We will contact you (at the email address you provide at the time of the application) when your passport has arrived and is available for pickup.
DRIVER'S LICENSE
As of May 1 2017, holders of Swedish driver’s licenses will not be able to renew their license if they do not permanently reside in Sweden. More information on the change can be found in the FAQ section.

CERTIFICATION OF DOCUMENTS
The Consulate in LA can issue certificated copies – sometimes requested by Swedish authorities – of original documents and IDs. The fee for this service is $19.00 per document.
